                 Who Are We?

See our new recruitment video!  by Klaus Gehr

So who exactly are the Scarborough Royal Guard you may ask? We are not cast, but we aren't patrons either. We fall under the realm of "playtons", visitors to the faire that choose to dress up and interact with the cast and anyone else that is willing to play with us. Our status is defined by the green sashes we wear with pride, and the stripes we earn for each year of service. Our only pay is the gratification we feel in serving our King. We are a varied group, including men and women, both young and old. Our characters are as varied as we are ranging from foot soldiers and archers to musketeers and armored knights, to privateers and mercenaries and even a few fantasy folks from time to time. We span the globe, hailing from all over including, but not limited to England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, etc.

The main requirements for becoming a member of the Royal Guard are as follows: Be dressed in proper garb, including footwear. We may not march, but damn we look good! You must carry a weapon, for how else can you defend Our King if you are unarmed? Be able to strut with us in the noon parade and be willing to interact with the crowds along the way.

What exactly does the Royal Guard do? Plenty. Our main event is the daily noon-time parade that runs through Scarborough. We strut and interact with the patrons along the parade route. When we are on duty, we are often seen around the vicinity of one of Their Majesties, ready and willing to lend a hand if needed. Most importantly we provide a presence and an atmosphere around the cast that allows them to feel a certain degree of safety. From time to time we are asked to volunteer for other services around the faire like assisting with the children's knighting ceremony or assisting with one of the shows. And always, we may find ourselves mixed up in a bit of intrigue or improvisation with some of the other Guard or a cast member, so always be on your toes!

What are the benefits of being in the Royal Guard? As stated before, we are not paid to be there. We receive no discounts or special treatment. We do what we do out of love for our faire and for the desire to have fun. The main thing that comes from being in the Royal Guard is a strong camaraderie with people of similar interests which in turn has enriched our lives beyond measure.
